Whirlybird Installation
Brisbane — From $180
Mike installs quality whirlybird turbine vents on all roof types across Brisbane. Wind-powered, maintenance-free, and sized correctly for your home. Owner-operated and fully insured.
What Is a Whirlybird and How Does It Work?
A whirlybird (also called a turbine vent or roof ventilator) is a spinning dome fitted to your roofline. As wind passes over the roof, it causes the turbine to spin. This spinning motion creates a low-pressure zone inside the dome, which draws hot, humid air up from your roof cavity and expels it outside.
Even on a relatively still day, hot air naturally rises — so the convective lift alone provides continuous ventilation. On windy days, a quality whirlybird can extract thousands of cubic metres of hot air per hour.
Benefits of Whirlybird Installation in Brisbane
- Lower ceiling temperatures — reduce your roof cavity from 70°C+ to 55°C or less, making the whole house more comfortable
- Reduced air conditioning load — less heat pushing through your ceiling means your air con doesn't work as hard
- Moisture control — Brisbane's humidity means condensation can build up in poorly ventilated roofs. Continuous airflow prevents mould and timber rot
- No electricity required — a standard whirlybird is 100% wind-powered, adding zero to your energy bill
- Long service life — quality brands like Edmonds last 15–20+ years with no maintenance required
Whirlybird Installation on Brisbane Tile Roofs
Most Brisbane homes have terracotta or concrete tile roofs. Installing a whirlybird on a tile roof involves carefully removing one tile, cutting the base flashing to fit, and seating the whirlybird flashing beneath surrounding tiles to create a weatherproof seal. When done correctly, a tile-roof whirlybird installation is completely watertight — even in heavy Queensland downpours.
Mike uses stainless steel screws and purpose-made tile roof flashings for every installation. He carries a range of flashing profiles to suit different tile brands and profiles found across Brisbane suburbs.
Whirlybird Installation on Metal & Colorbond Roofs
Metal and Colorbond roofs are straightforward to work with. The whirlybird base is screwed directly to the sheet and sealed with a purpose-made EPDM gasket and roofing silicone. Installation is typically faster than on tile roofs. Mike colour-matches the whirlybird to your Colorbond colour where possible.
How Many Whirlybirds Does My Brisbane Home Need?
The generally accepted rule is one whirlybird per 50 m² of roof space. Here's a quick guide for typical Brisbane homes:
- 2-bedroom house (~100 m² roof): 2 units
- 3-bedroom house (~150 m² roof): 3 units
- 4-bedroom house (~200 m² roof): 4 units
- Large home or Queenslander (~250+ m² roof): 5+ units
These are starting points — roof pitch, ceiling insulation, and existing vents all affect the final recommendation. Mike always inspects in person before confirming the right number of units.
Whirlybird Brands Mike Installs
Mike installs quality Australian brands including Edmonds (Australia's most popular whirlybird brand) and Ventair. He does not install cheap imported units — the bearings fail quickly, they rattle, and the sheet metal corrodes within a few years.
Edmonds whirlybirds are manufactured in Australia, use sealed precision bearings, and carry a 10-year warranty. They're the unit Mike would put on his own home.
