Solar Vent Installation
Brisbane — From $385
A solar-powered roof vent works even on still, hot summer days — no wind required. More airflow than a standard whirlybird, at zero electricity cost.
What Is a Solar Roof Vent?
A solar vent is a powered roof ventilator. Instead of relying on wind to spin a turbine, it uses a small photovoltaic (solar) panel mounted on the unit itself to power an internal fan. The fan continuously draws hot air from your roof cavity and expels it outside — all day, every day the sun shines, with no wiring and no electricity bills.
Advantages of Solar Vents Over Whirlybirds
- Works without wind — Brisbane's inner suburbs can be sheltered from prevailing winds. A solar vent operates regardless.
- Higher airflow rate — a quality solar vent typically moves 900–1,200 m³ per hour, versus 600–900 m³ for a comparable whirlybird in average wind conditions.
- Consistent performance — the fan speed is steady, providing predictable ventilation throughout the day.
- Silent operation — no moving external parts, so there is no noise on windy nights.
- Zero running cost — solar-powered, so no electricity cost.
When Should You Choose a Solar Vent?
A solar vent is the right choice if your home has any of the following characteristics:
- A large roof space (250 m² or more)
- A sheltered position with low average wind speed
- A steeply pitched roof where whirlybirds perform less efficiently
- You want the maximum possible airflow to deal with extreme summer heat
For most standard Brisbane homes, a quality whirlybird is excellent value and performs very well. If you are not sure which suits your home, Mike will advise you honestly during your free on-site assessment — he won't upsell you to a solar vent if a whirlybird will do the job.
Solar Vent Installation Process
Installation is very similar to a whirlybird. Mike cuts an appropriately sized hole in the roof, seats the flashing base weatherproof against your roof material, and mounts the solar vent on top. No electrical wiring is required — the solar panel charges directly to the built-in fan unit.
The entire job takes approximately 45–60 minutes per unit. As with all of Mike's work, the site is left clean and all packaging is removed.
