What Is a Solar Whirly Bird?

A "solar whirly bird" is a solar vent — a solar-powered roof ventilator. Both names describe the same unit, and most Brisbane homeowners use them interchangeably because it sits in the same place on the roof and does the same job as a traditional whirly bird.

Instead of relying on wind to spin a turbine, it uses a small photovoltaic (solar) panel mounted on the unit itself to power an internal fan. The fan continuously draws hot air from your roof cavity and expels it outside — all day, every day the sun shines, with no wiring and no electricity bills.

Solar Whirly Bird Installation Process

Installation is very similar to a whirlybird. Mike cuts an appropriately sized hole in the roof, seats the flashing base weatherproof against your roof material, and mounts the solar vent on top. No electrical wiring is required — the solar panel charges directly to the built-in fan unit.

The entire job takes approximately 45–60 minutes per unit. As with all of Mike's work, the site is left clean and all packaging is removed.

Already Have a Roof Vent? Replacement and Upgrades

If you are replacing an existing unit rather than fitting a new one, the job is quicker — the roof penetration is already there, so it is usually a straight swap.
